A Slight Ache

Harold Pinter’s A Slight Ache becomes a haunting exploration of identity, aging, and the fragile constructs of reality in this bold new staging.
It is the longest day of the year. In their idyllic country garden, Edward and Flora enjoy breakfast, their conversation hovering between the mundane beauty of flowers and the quiet encroachment of unease. When a silent match seller - who has been standing outside their gate for two months - enters their world, he sparks a slow disintegration of Edward’s carefully constructed identity and the sterile perfection of their marriage. What begins as subtle tension grows into a visceral unravelling of selfhood, as Edward and Flora are forced to confront their deepest fears, desires, and mortality.
Director Tommaso Giacomin reimagines the enigmatic match seller as a shifting, inhuman presence - a puppet-like shape-shifting entity of fur, bone, objects, lights and sounds. Drawing on his own experience of loss, this staging explores aging and existential dread in a society obsessed with youth and perfection.
